It was with great delight that I discovered that Peter was to make an
appearance talking about his life in my locality. 'An Audience with
Peter Sallis' was held a Crosby Civic Hall in Crosby, Merseyside.
I was fortunate enough to get a seat at the front of the room, not a seat was spare,
and settled myself down for a very enjoyable evening in a full
As soon as he came on stage Peter made a humour of his eyesight problem
and bowed to the back of the stage. During the first session Peter
talked about his life, prompted by the very attractive Samantha Norman
(daughter of Barry), and covered everything from his life in
banking, through the war, into show business, and Last of the Summer
Wine and Wallace and Grommet.
It was all interesting and included a plethora
of Peter's infamous dry wit. It did bring a lump to the throat when
talking about Bill, Peter apologised and took a few seconds break to
shed a few tears for his dear friend.
After a short break Peter and Samantha returned to the stage and a
question and answer session. Every time I thought of a question someone
would beat me to it. Eventually however I got the last question in and
asked Peter his opinion on the current situation regarding his beloved
cricket. The session came to an end to a tremendous round of applause
and Peter came down into the auditorium to sign copies of his book.
The
queue was long but Peter stayed in his seat and spared a few kind words
for everyone who wished to speak to him and was happy to pose for
photographs.
A great evening was enjoyed by many and I do advise you to try and see
Peter if he makes an appearance near you. I do know that appearances
are planned for Harrogate and Pocklington amongst other venues at some
point during 2007.
Finally a big hello to Neil and his wife who shocked me by coming over
to say hello, it turned out they knew me from this very site!!
Thanks Peter for a most enjoyable evening
