FOOTNOTE: What IS Foggy's First Name!

We had a sack of email after several fans asked if we had Foggy's first name correct in our "Vingate Summer Wine Quiz" (above).  Many thought our answer - Oliver - was not exactly right.
So we went to the Summer Wine experts - Pat Carline, Co-Editor of the Summer Wine website - and Clive Eardley, President of the LOTSW Appreciation Society.

First of all Pat:

"Foggy's name is WALTER not Oliver - I refer everyone to 'Odd Dog Men' when Foggy himself says his own name, when imagining Honours from the Queen and he quite clearly says 'Walter C Dewhurst' - the Oliver comes from one of Clegg's jokes in 'The Kink in Foggy's Niblick' where they are in Foggy's attic, looking for his golf clubs; Foggy says words to the effect that much of the stuff belongs to his landlady, but there are some of his quality possessions in there. Clegg holds up a tatty tea chest with the letters C.O.D. (for 'Cash on delivery'), stamped on it and says 'Oh, Corporal Oliver Dewhurst?' -  Foggy looks disgusted and more or less tells Clegg to shut up - hence the confusion, but I think we must accept that Foggy DOES know his own name and that it is Walter!!!!"

And now Clive...

"Foggy's name has changed twice. In one episode it is referred to as Oliver but in the 1981 episode it says Walter Dewhirst so that is the name that is more likely to be used. Also the initial on his case in the early episode The Kink in Foggy's Niblick also refer to him as W.C so that seems the best bet. A lot of people ask how he got the name Foggy and that is because in the early Foggy episodes he used to go into a kind of trance this was called Fogging hence the work Foggy."

FOOTNOTE: We have now amended the answer to Walter - many thanks for all your email.
