SUMMER WINE AND THE CITY COLUMN #18
MAY 6, 2004

Hi guys!  Dinky here with my last Summer Wine Column before I make my big trip to Holmfirth for twelve days in May!!  What excitement!

We have a few new developments in the NYC area.  First off, the new BBC America Shop catalog is in and there is a new Summer Wine book that we can buy for $22.98.  It is called “Last of The Summer Wine” and it has a picture of the dream team trio on the cover, Compo, Cleggy and Foggy.

It has interviews, biographies and an in-depth guide to the making of an episode by Roy Clarke and Alan W. Bell.  It is 240 pages, soft cover with many photos and an episode guide.  You can order one at www.BBCAmericaShop.com.  It is Item #BCB4818.

Next, we have some interest in another SW fan luncheon this June or July in Rockaway, N.J.  Two fans from last year’s luncheon, Jim and Dee, have introduced me to two of their friends, John & Emily, who live in Pennsylvania, but hail from England.  They are in England right now for a visit to relatives who live in Leeds and they would like to have the luncheon upon their return. But they will have to wait for my return, so we are planning it for the summer.

I posted a notice on our Summer Wine Yahoo Group about bringing back some small Summer Wine souvenirs for any American fans who would like them and I received two responses.  One of them was from a fan who lives only 45 minutes away from me!!  What a surprise!  We can get together almost anytime we’d like!!  Well, she is interested in the fan lunch, so that makes seven of us along with my husband!!  This will be very exciting and nice.  We plan to have the lunch on a Saturday afternoon at the Sizzler Steak House just outside the Rockaway Mall.  I will post more notices when we have a firm date and hope to see as many of you as possible!

PBS has been broadcasting some older Summer Wine shows from 2001.  They are just trying to mix us up!!  We just got used to seeing the 2003 series and bang..we are back to 2001.  On Sunday, April 25th, Channel 50, WNJN showed “The Missing Bus of Mrs. Avery” from 7:30-8:00PM.  The girls all get in the bus to go on a picnic and when Mrs. Avery stops the bus and steps out for a moment, it rolls down a hill out of her sight.  So, she loses all the ladies and the boys find her alone in the road and bring her to the pub for a drink.  The girls still have their picnic when the bus stops rolling and Mrs. A. gets real drunk.  It was a fun episode!

On Saturday, May 1st, Channel 50 showed “Hey Big Vendor” from 9:30-10:00PM.  This is another 2001 episode.  It is about Barry and Wesley putting a gas-run coffee machine on a golf course.  Mr. Lucas from “Served” is playing the course and just as he is about to tee off, the coffee machine starts rattling and smoking and bursts into flames shortly thereafter.  Mr. Lucas is furious and yells violently at Barry!

Also on May 1st, Channel 21 showed another 1999 episode of “EastEnders”.  It is finally New Year’s Eve, 1999 and Barry marries Natalie in a double wedding along with Ian marrying Melanie.  It was so odd to watch them being all happy because it was finally the year 2000, while I’m sitting here in mid-2004 watching this 5 year-old show!!!  Not that we don’t love the show.  It’s very interesting.  But we can’t help but wonder what has transpired during the next 5 years that we will not see til 2009!!  It’s frustrating, but at least we did catch up to 2003 with Summer Wine!

Well guys, I gotta go pack for the trip now.  Take care all and I’ll see you on the other side!!!

Watch out for further updates on the SW-NY scene

What a week that was!  Dinky, our author of the popular Summer Wine and the City column, was the toast of Holmfirth during her first week-long holiday to Summer Wine country.  She came over with her husband, Alex, to meet co-editors Patrick Brooke and Pat Carline of the Holmfirth-based website. The local media were invited to come along - and they turned up in Force!  First it was a broadcast from Patrick's Valley garden on BBC Radio Leeds, when presenter Rod Lawrence (photo below) came to do the interview.  Next, it was a LIVE broadcast on BBC TV, beamed direct from Sid's Cafe. The crowds gathered round to watch, expecting an early filming of LOTSW.  Then Dinky hit the press with the headlines "Summer Wine Meets The Big Apple" in the local Huddersfield Examer, reproduced on the right. In the colour photo is Dinky and her husband Alex, and Pat Carline (2nd from left) with her daughter.  The local press, as well as local people, were intrigued about how a New Yorker happened to present a column for New Yorkers - on a Holmfirth-based website! There was a tremendous amount of interest, which was good for the series and the town of Holmfirth. But lets not forget Dinky and Alex, on holiday to see the Summer Wine sights. After countless walks round town exploring the famous location spots, they went on the TV location bus, from Sid's Cafe, and during the week also met two stars from Last of the Summer Wine, including Ken Kitson, who plays the famous LOTSW bobby. "We have had an unbelievable time," she said. "I did not expect so much interest in my visit, it has been overwhelming.  It is great so see there is so much interest in LOTSW and everyone in Holmfirth has been so kind and helpful. We have had a tremendous time, and look forward to coming again, hopefully for the 35th anniversary of the programme"  Patrick said there had been a welcome boost in hits to the website, following the media coverage, as well as a flood of emails from well-wishers.  Nearly ten emails had been received from new LOTSW fans who only heard about the website through the coverage on radio and TV.  Elsie Parker, of Wakefield, said:  "I can't believe how much information is on your website. I was fascinated when I saw the TV news on Monday, and it is a welcome change to see so much interest in the world's longest running comedy series. We will be checking your site on a regular basis." Another new visitor to the website, Richard Thomas, who lives in Leeds, said they were awaiting a visit from four Americans this August. Top of their wish list of places to visit? You've guessed it - Summer Wine country, Holmfirth!
