Summer Wine cast shot for Summer Wine Online 24-6-01Summer Wine Online was privileged to join the BBC cast and crew for filming in Slaithwaite, next to the beautifully renovated canal, on a warm and sunny Sunday morning, June 24.
After taking an official shot of the cast for Summer Wine Online (see left), actor Frank Thornton (Truly) said he was delighted to be back filming in the local valleys.
"On such a beautiful day, I could not imagine being anywhere nicer. And everyone is so kind and friendly here."
Peter Sallis (Clegg) said he was amazed at the way the area kept improving year after year.
"It is so nice everytime we come back to see how the area has improved. Just look at the canal, only a few years ago it was covered over, and an eyesore in places. Now it has been gloriously renovated and will be here for generations to come.
"I look forward to coming back to Holmfirth every year,  and we do get such a nice warm response from everyone locally. I realise the filming can sometimes cause problems locally, but everyone is so very nice and welcoming."
There was a break in the filming when a brightly coloured narrow boat sailed past on the canal, just several feet away from the activity (see photo below). The cast and crew took a break to watch the craft glide past - while the amazed couple on the boat could not believe their eyes to come across the "film set."
The cast and crew were also complimentary about the Summer Wine website, saying it was a much appreciated way of providing information and updates for fans worldwide.
One lighting engineer confessed to looking at the shots of Holmfirth during the winter months.
"If we're a little bit "homesick" in London, we''ll often look at the shots of the filming on the website, and the pictures of the Holme Valley, just to cheer us up. It is great to know we are so popular."
