Summer Wine On-line

Welcome to the official web site of the Summer Wine Appreciation Society, in partnership with Holmfirth Web. This is our tribute to the world's longest-running TV comedy series which is filmed in the Holme Valley, and surrounding villages.

One of many educational trips to Holmfirth Library.
Filling one of their long days of enforced unemployment discussing ways of
making the best use of Clegg's antiquated bicycle. Episode -"Forked Lightning".
The modern real library in the centre of Holmfirth is not used for filming.
Holmfirth Methodist Church in Crown Bottom was (and still is) used as the
location for the LOTSW Library.

Sadly Michael Bates (Blamire) died leaving a huge void. Although it was
thought that his death would mean the end of Summer Wine, the decision was
made to make another series with a new character to compliment Compo and
Clegg. The arrival of "Foggy" (Brian Wilde) was the start of a whole new era
of misadventure. Foggy's first encounter with "Big Mal" wasn't the best start.
However "Big Mal" did  have a word on the side with Compo and Clegg,
"Look after that Barmpot, you'll get some good mileage out of him".

"Big Day at Dream Acres"
Everyone helps out at the local fete. Filmed on Spring Lane, Jackson Bridge
this hour long episode included big star Ray McAnally who played a tramp.

Posing for a publicity photo in "Sid's Cafe" at Boreham Wood Studios.
The studio set expertly designed and built is an exact copy of the actual
interior of the cafe in the Church Square, Holmfirth. Some scenes have been
filmed in the cafe but it  proved too small for cast and crew. The studio
replica has removable walls to allow better camera and crew movement and
space. Have you noticed it's a studio set.? Difficult because even the autumn leaves blow in the open door of the cafe from Church Square despite being in a studio. The exterior of the real Sid's Cafe is still used for location filming in Holmfirth - you may see the crew filming during a visit to the Holme Valley.

Foggy went off to the East Coast to decorate eggs and left behind Compo and
Clegg. Edie's brother, Seymour Utterthwaite, played by Shakespearean actor
Michael Aldridge, dropped lucky when he found himself a "test pilot" for his
many crackpot inventions  - Compo Simonite. This scene is from "Uncle of the Bride".

Time for a cuppa? Syd and Ivy (John Comer and Jane Freeman) having a joke at Compo's expense.  His unusual hat and jacket being the subject of the joke.
